WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY
7th & 8th Grade Sunday School Lesson - Submitted by Lynell Kennedy

(The day before this lesson I went to Phoenicia and HEB and bought all sorts of breads from around the world. Instead of donuts on this Sunday, we enjoyed the bread. They really enjoyed this.)

What are some things you enjoy doing with your family or friends?
On all our retreats – I LOVE taking Holy Communion with all of you

WHAT IS THE LORD’S SUPPER
The Lord’s Supper is: A remembrance of Jesus’ sacrificial death and resurrection
A celebration of God’s covenant of forgiveness, love and hope
A reminder of God’s presence among us
A source of grace which helps strengthen and renew our faith.
*It’s the central celebration of the Christian faith – the sacramental meal which commemorates our redemption by Jesus.
*A sign of the love and unity shared by Christians everywhere and one of the sacraments instituted by Jesus. (Sacrament: Any of 7 rites in the Christian church originated or observed by Jesus; sacred significance)
*It is a way of celebrating our love for Christ and His works in our lives

ORIGINS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER
-a covenant meal not new – it was mentioned in the Bible in Exodus 24:11
“But God did not raise His hand against these leaders of the
            Israelites (Moses, Aron, Nabab, Abihuh, & 70 elders of Israel);
They saw God, and they ate and drank.”
-a covenant meal celebrates the sealing of a promise; the one above was after 10 Commandments given from God; It is between God and man

A Little Palm Reading - Submitted by Linda Odonnell

Today we celebrate Palm Sunday; we prepare ourselves for the time “before” the cross and what lies ahead.  The first part of the lesson is to remind the kids of “what they know”. Read the phrase or give them a piece of the story and have one of the complete it for you:

            Mary had a little lamb………
            God bless America……..
At the end of the Wizard of Oz, where does Dorothy end up and how does
            she get there?
Sticks and stones may break my bones…..
            Oh say can you see…..
Jack and Jill went up the hill….
Take me out to the ballgame….
            Row, row, row……

Ask the kids, how they know the ending. The main point in this exercise is for them to understand that they can end the phrase, song verse or story because they have heard it before. It is “familiar” to them. Now move on to scripture. Have different youth look up these passages and read them out loud.

Made New in Christ - Submitted by Linda Odonnell

What does the word “new” mean?

Tell me three things that you like when it is new. (examples: new clothes, new shoes, new CD/DVD, new day, new-born baby, new friends, etc.)

Tell me something that can not be “made new” again. (toothpaste back in the tube, a CD/DVD once you’ve broken the seal, something you have already heard, etc.)

Scripture:
Matthew 26:29 (New American Standard Bible)
29"But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."
What does Christ mean when He says “drink it new”?
Mark 1:27 (New American Standard Bible)
27They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."
What was so “new” about His teaching? Was it a new teaching or someone new teaching it? (Christ spoke with authority. Why did that rub some people the wrong way? He did not quote humans but his authority is straight from God.) How did His teaching differ from what had been taught?
Mark 16:17 (New American Standard Bible)
 17"These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues;
What did Christ mean when He said “new tongues”? Was it a new language or a new approach? (Maybe it has something to do with the authority behind what was being said.)
